Whining humming sound 2006 Chevy?

My 2006 Trailblazer started making a humming/whining sound a few months ago. It's volume has steadily increased so I can now hear it over the radio. Mechanics have suggested it's either the water pump or alternator, but I'm not sure if either is correct. Is anyone else having this problem?
