Circling Dog Habit Before Sleeping?

Many dogs of different kinds have the habit (instinctive) of turning around a number of times in the place where they intend to lay down. Presumably this was to flatten the gr during their evolutionary phase. So do all dogs perform this action in the same direction (clockwise or anti-clockwise)? Are there any exceptions?
