Does anyone know how long you can get locked up for attempted murder?

My ex boyfriend tried to shoot somebody. the bullet missed him though so the guy is alright. my ex tried to shoot that guy becoz a few dayz ago that same guy tried to shoot at him... so basically he waz tryin to get revenge. so basically hes bn charged with attempted murder how long will he be in jail. ive heard alot of people say 5years to life. by the way he's 17 yrs old....
